The North Atlantic Ocean hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and continues through Nov. 30. Even though the peak of the season is typically between mid-August and late October, when hurricanes are often most active and dangerous, tropical systems can still form outside of hurricane season as early as May and as late as December. Although the number of tropical storms and hurricanes typically peaks during August and September, it is important to remember that Florida can be impacted by tropical weather systems any time during the six-month long season. Everyone needs to plan ahead and remain ready for possible hurricane impacts.
Hurricane guides will be available at locations throughout campus. These guides are packed with information about how to better prepare for the hurricane season, as well as local resources such as county evacuation levels and shelters. There are guides for both Sarasota and Manatee Counties, so you can pick whichever you like, or both! The first step to protecting yourself from a hurricane is to have a plan that addresses preparation, evacuation, and communications. To make sure you are prepared, follow these steps:
- Have the emergency contact information for your designated school official. In the case of a hurricane or other natural disaster, you need to be able to communicate with your designated school official (who is most likely your administrative department director, faculty division chair, or residence hall director) so that you are accounted for and can receive additional information and guidance.
- Sign up for NCFSafe alert system for emergency notifications. Signing up to receive these messages can help warn you before a hurricane occurs and keep you informed about the area’s emergency response plans.
- Develop a reliable evacuation plan and follow the order to evacuate. President O’Shea will make the final determination if the New College campus needs to be evacuated.
- Review information in the local county hurricane guides to become familiar with your evacuation zone, the evacuation route, and shelter locations.
- Keep important documents in a safe place or create password-protected digital copies. Make sure all documents including your passport, student visa and Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status,” are in a secure location where you can access them if a hurricane affects your area. It is also best practice to make copies of these documents and store the copies in a separate, secure location.
- Gather needed supplies for at least three to five days. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends having on hand a 3-day supply of nonperishable food and water for each person. For water, that amounts to 1 gallon per person, per day. A case of 24 half-liter bottles, readily available at warehouse stores, contains just over 3 gallons of water. In the event of a power outage, you might want to ensure that you have foods that can be eaten without being heated. A solar- or hand-crank-powered radio will work during power outages, and some may also charge your cell phone.
