Campus Police will be participating in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, October 26th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. During that time, members of the community are encouraged to drop off potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at the Campus Police Department, where officers will safely dispose of them. Participation in the program is anonymous.
The total amount of prescription drugs collected by local, tribal, state and federal law enforcement partners from 2010 through 2018 was 9,964,714 pounds, or 4,982 tons.
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Initiative addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. According to a National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abuse controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. The DEA’s Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.
Since regulations made the disposal of controlled prescription drugs easier for patients and their caregivers, law enforcement agencies, pharmacies, hospitals and clinics have begun continuous collection of these medications.
The Campus Police Department is located on the New College of Florida campus at 501 College Drive 34243, one block North of University Parkway off of U.S. 41. The public should park in the Heiser Natural Sciences parking lot opposite the police station. Campus Police also have an on-site prescription take-back container where community members can bring in prescription medication anytime. No liquids or needles will be accepted.
