Natural Sciences Seminar: From Fields to Flowers
Friday, October 26, 2018,2:30 pm - 4:00 pm EDT
Dr. Rachel Mallinger, assistant professor of entomology at the University of Florida, will discuss her research: From Fields to Flowers: Factors Affecting Wild Bee Pollination Services Across Spatial Scales.
There are over 4,000 species of native, wild bees in North America. These bees are important pollinators for both wild and crop plants. However, their value as pollinators is affected by their abundance, diversity and pollination efficacy, which are in turn influenced by local and landscape-scale factors. In this seminar, Dr. Mallinger will discuss her research exploring how variables across spatial scales — from landscape structure to individual floral traits — affect wild bee communities and their pollination services. This research has implications for both enhancing crop pollination and conserving wild bees within agricultural landscapes.
