Natural Sciences Seminar – Second Look: The Effective Use of Technology in the Prevention of Interpersonal Violence
Monday, September 16, 2019,4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT
Dr. Tania Roy, assistant professor of human centered computing at New College, will give the presentation. Digital dating abuse is a form of interpersonal violence carried out using text messages, emails and social media sites. It has become a significant mental health crisis among the college-going population — 43 percent of college women who are dating report experiencing violent and abusive dating behaviors. Existing technology- and nontechnology-based intervention programs do not provide assistance at the onset of abuse.
In this talk professor Roy will discuss a prototype mobile phone app that uses machine learning techniques to classify text messages exchanged between two partners as abusive or nonabusive. This talk will also focus on understanding user trust issues relating to using such a detection tool.
Roy will discuss the results of a user study conducted to investigate different visualization paradigms that would assist users to trust the feedback regarding the possible abusive nature of their online communication.
