Natural Sciences Seminar: Trees, Carbon and Lasers – NASA’s GEDI Mission
Monday, December 3, 2018,11:00 am - 12:00 pm EST
GEDI, the first space-borne laser instrument to measure the structure of Earth’s tropical and temperate forests in high resolution and three dimensions, is scheduled to be launched from Kennedy Space Center Dec. 4.
Dr. Sean Healey, research ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service, is in Florida for the launch and will be at New College to describe how this instrument will measure forest biomass from its vantage point on the International Space Station. These measurements will help fill in critical gaps in scientists’ understanding of how much carbon is stored in the world’s forests, the potential for ecosystems to absorb rising concentrations of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere, and the impact of forest changes on biodiversity.
