Staged reading of “The (M)others”
Saturday, February 16, 2019,2:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST
“The (M)others” is a collection of verbatim excerpts from interviews conducted by Dr. Nikki Yeboah with Bay-area mothers who have lost loved ones at the hands of police. Through their stories, we get closer to understanding the toll police violence takes on families.
The performance last an hour and will be followed by a panel that features two of the mothers, Sharon Watkins and Kimberly Phillips, whose stories are told in the play; playwright Nikki Yeboah, assistant professor of communication
studies at San Jose State University; the director, Dr. Diego Villada, assistant professor of theatre and performance studies at New College of Florida; and performers from the staged reading — Cabrini Austin (New College of Florida), Dr. Denise Davis-Cotton (Center for Partnerships in Arts Integrated Teaching); Mary Robertson (New College of Florida); and Dr. Queen Zabriskie (Sociology, New College of Florida).
There will be a pre-performance reception from 1-1:30 p.m.
Co-sponsored by the Center for Partnerships in Arts Integrated Teaching at the University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee, and the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center.
