Workshop: ‘Creative Vision & the Directing Process’
Saturday, September 7, 2019,1:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT
The New College Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies AOC and [performance@new college] presents “Creative Vision & the Directing Process,” a workshop taught by Toby Vera Bercovici.
Part lecture, part dialogue, part on-its-feet exploration and discovery, this three-hour workshop will take students through the advanced creative work of a director. We will look at how to mine a text for images and associations; how to tap into our own creative impulses; how to express these impulses to designers; and how to open up and engage the imaginations of our actors. We will work toward the development of a “matrix,” which is an organic, deeply personal concept which can then be applied to all aspects of production. We will also discuss how to talk about and market our own work.
Toby Vera Bercovici is a director whose work utilizes a rigorous authenticity, playful relationship with the elements of time, and uniquely feminist aesthetic to help tell important stories. She has directed for multiple companies throughout New York City and New England and is a governing member of the ensemble Real Live Theatre. She has taught theater at Colby College, Holyoke Community College, American International College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She holds a BA in Theater from Smith College and an MFA in Directing from UMASS Amherst and has ongoing training in the Michael Chekhov technique, Authentic Movement, Suzuki, and Viewpoints. She was a 2018-2019 Directing Fellow at Asolo Repertory Theatre.
