The Reflections of Manatee historic preservation group and Time Sifters’ Archaeological Society urged the council to authorize a contract for an archaeological excavation of the Manatee Mineral Spring area before it is included in an eastward extension of the Riverwalk park. The site is the past location of Angola, a settlement of runaway slaves, and the pioneer community of Manatee. It could still have buried artifacts from those eras. The dig supervised by New College of Florida anthropologist Uzi Baram will be done in January. The council unanimously authorized the agreement, contingent on city attorney Scott Rudacille’s approval.
