Sarasota-based New College of Florida has raised $1 million in the first step of many to increase its fundraising efforts.

The liberal arts college raised the funds from six donors who are current of former members of the college’s board and board of trustees. The donations came after an anonymous donor told the college they would donate an undisclosed amount if the college raised $1 million.

“This started because I had a donor who realized that we needed to increase our capacity in order to raise more money for the college,” said Maryanne Young, vice president of advancement and executive director of New College Foundation. “They came to me last fall saying, ‘We would like to help you do this.’”

The money will be used to hire a director of philanthropy, with possibly another new hire next year. It will also be used toward consulting services for fundraising and infrastructure needs.
