New College of Florida first-year Daniel Schell placed first at the United States National Collegiate 3-D Championships in the Men’s Barebow division on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Foley, Alabama. Competing against 32 other archers from colleges and universities across the U.S., Schell won with a high score of 320 in his division; athletes in the Barebow division use no mechanical sights, relying only on the ability of the archer to align the arrow by eye.

The National Collegiate 3D Archery Championship attracted 339 individual archers from over 32 universities and colleges to compete in Compound, Hunter, Olympic recurve, and Barebow classes. Archers competed on ranges with full-scale, high-density foam 3D targets set in woods and fields.

“What makes these competitions so difficult is that you only get one shot at each target, so you have to be on every time with no compensation after a shot” said Daniel. “I’m really proud to represent New College and the U.S. in the sport, especially as the Barebow class is growing nationally.”

Daniel is a member of the USA Archery Team and recently represented the United States at the World Field Archery Championships in Cortina, Italy.
