New York-based piano and percussion ensemble opens the season for New Music New College program

A four-piece music ensemble with the unusual name of Yarn/Wire has gotten used to social-media friend requests from knitting companies — or their bots.

But the name actually refers to the unusual makeup of the ensemble: two percussionists (yarn, referring to what their mallets are wrapped with) and two pianos (wire, referring to the internal mechanisms of the piano, and also to the electronics the musicians employ).

The New York-based group will make its first Sarasota appearance Oct. 5 for the opening of New College of Florida’s contemporary music series, New Music New College. One founding member of the ensemble, percussionist Ian Antonio, also performs with Wet Ink, which appeared in last season’s New Music lineup.
