This fall, 21 students have received four different types of competitive New College scholarships: the Barancik Access Leadership Scholarship, the Archimedes STEM Scholarship, the Skestos Scholars Leadership Program and the John Jakes Writing Scholarship.
“Our competitive scholarships invest in students who demonstrate a special affinity—for writing, for STEM activities and for leadership,” said Sonia Wu, the director of admissions and associate dean of enrollment management at New College. “We’re also investing in the enthusiasm and energy those students bring to the classroom and to the community.”
The Barancik Access Leadership Scholarship was developed in 2020 to support high-potential talent from underrepresented populations in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Funded by a grant from the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation, the scholarship amounts are up to $7,500 for students residing on campus and up to $2,500 for students living off campus.

Madeleine Noble (Sarasota, Riverview High School)
Xabier Rezola (Parrish, Southeast High School)
The Archimedes STEM Scholarship, established by donors Andrew and Judith Economos in 2019, is awarded to one outstanding student who shows an interest and involvement in STEM-related fields and activities throughout high school. The scholarship is valued at up to $40,000 over four years.
The 2020 recipient is:
Barbara Paris (Oakland, California; Head-Royce School)
The Skestos Scholars Leadership Program, developed in 2019 by donors George and Tina Skestos, is designed for students who demonstrate leadership development and interest in high school. Up to 10 students receive scholarships totaling up to $25,000 over four years.

Charles Reardon (St. Petersburg, Florida; Hollins High School)
Brenna Seith (Stow, Massachusetts; Minuteman High School)
Morgan Sellers (Ocala, Florida; Pace Center for Girls)
Quentin Voccia (Altamonte Springs, Florida; Lake Brantley High School)
The John Jakes Writing Scholarship, created in 2018, is available to up to four students who show an interest/ability in writing and wish to pursue writing-related careers. Students receive a one-time, non-renewable $2,000 scholarship during their first year of study.
The two recipients are:
Brendan McMahon (Lake City, Florida; Columbia High School)
Ashley Sciame (Bradenton, The Out-Of-Door Academy)
